26 Eye-Catching Long Exposure Photographs
Posted on 28. Oct, 2009 by admin in Inspiration
Long exposure is really amazing photography technique to capture light and movement. When an image is taken including stationary and moving subjects (for example, a fixed street and moving cars or a camera within a car showing a fixed dash-board and moving scenery) using a slow shutter speed, interesting effects, such as light trails occur.
Long exposures are easiest to accomplish in low-light conditions, but can be done in brighter light using neutral density filters or specially designed cameras.
Here i have collected 26 eye-caching long exposure photographs.

Traffic lights are always interesting, however the shot that stands out for me in this collection is the forest at night.

I agree with @Manz – the snowed forest is great – something out of the x-files, but not all of these are long exposure. The theme park big drop ride is just using a ‘tracking’ technique. Also if this (http://pelfusion.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/long-xposure-photo1.jpg) was long exposure all the cars would be blurred.

22 out of 26 isn’t bad.
(in other words – 4 aren’t long exposure. 3 are slow shutter speeds, but certainly shorter than 1s, and one is at LEAST 1/400 or so)

I’m a big fan of Patrick Smith. A lot of these are just crap though. Go set up a camera anywhere and do a 30 second exposure and you’ll get the same thing.

light trails from cars? and cityscapes? really? these are remarkably un-original for the most part. a few of the ones with water are ok.
but seriously, some of them aren’t even for-sure long exposures. they could just be high speed film or photoshop tricks.
boring.

The 9th picture, showing the sun over a bridge is definitely not a long-exposure shot. The cars are perfectly captured, and I looked at the properties on the Flickr page, and that shot was taken at a shutter speed of 1600. That’s pretty dang fast. Great pics otherwise though.

Real art, I collect city photos because they represent a lot of hardworking taxpayers money and if we don’t stop sinning, they’ll be HISTORY. Of course, the History Channel would like to see it all gone and us with it! Thank you!

Here’s an example of long-exposure, no HDR, old-school b&w:
