There is an old adage that taught us: “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” but in a world where there are thousands of competitors for any one specific product, this does not hold true. We are raised in a society, where generally, looks are often perceived as most important and this instance, it holds true.
Consumers generally tend to automatically go for a product where the packaging is most intriguing or appealing. Designers are now thinking outside of the box to make their products stand out the most. For our designers, to help you we’ve picked 50 of the best packaging designs we’ve seen. That stand out and make you want to grab the product.
The important aspects of the following designs it to notice the following:
- Simplicity
- Unusual shapes
- Bright Colors
- Large Typography
- Creative patterns
- Interesting Catch Phrases
While some of the products use one or more of these aspects, many just use one. In order for you to design the best possible packaging for your product, you need to know WHICH one’s to use. The only way you can do this is by doing the appropriate research.
Excellent product research is key to any packaging design. Sussing out your competitors, their income, their resources spent and finding out the consumer opinion on these packaging design is essential. Only once you have all of this information at the tips of your fingers, can you let yourself design to your hearts content.
But for now – look, enjoy and most importantly: comment.

WOW.. talk about eye candy. I really like the ones that are more “everyday use” sort of things. How cool would it be to open up your spice drawer and see ones like #33.. or go to change a light bulb like the Gauss packaging? I would have to think twice about throwing away those light bulb containers. Great post!

I sometimes find myself wondering if designers actually think about what they’re creating and why they’re doing the things they are. Personally I find some of these designs to be garish and almost obnoxious. All that aside though, the one I really have to wonder about is the FTD box. Is it supposed to resemble a casket? Because grandma dying isn’t exactly a major selling point for me.

The problem is, that some of these things I can’t really tell exactly what they are from the packaging. An important part of mechandise, especially in things that one could find in a grocery store is getting impulse buys. That’s not going to happen if people can’t instantly figure out exactly what you’re selling.
