Pictures or Text: What Makes A Blog Work Better? is a post from PelFusion

While there is likely no one right answer, many bloggers and SEOs have argued at length over what kind of blog achieves more success. Some claim that image-rich blogs accrue better Page Ranks while others say that text-heavy blogs do better because of their keywords, instructional content, and ease of hosting. First we have to differentiate what we mean by success. There are three major rubrics: site views, SEO, and usability. Taking into consideration these rubrics, let’s weigh some of the opinions and compare the relative merits of image-based blogs versus text-based ones.

Image-based media is becoming more popular

This is true. The rise of Instagram, Pinterest, and Tumblr testify to this. But at the same time WordPress, which caters far more to text-based blogs, is the most popular CMS in the world. So you can’t just say ‘text is dying.’ The most effective blogs merge images and text.

Text anchor links are better for SEO

Time and time again, search engines remind us that text works better than images in generating approval with search engines and optimizing your blog. While images can still be infused with alt tags, they don’t benefit from the same weight given to search engine-friendly anchor text.

Subjectively, images and words are equally effective at conveying ideas

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In fact, they say that so often that it’s cliched and meaningless. The reality is, both images and words can accomplish the same task. Images can often do it quicker and with less effort, but they can also lead to confusing messages, unintended insinuations, and miscommunications.

Image blogs can make it easier to stand out from other blogs

However, poorly used images can compromise usability if the images obscure site navigation, menus, and links. Similarly, the overuse of text in bland, jumbled ways can be just as confusing. In the end, the strength of both text and images are subject to a good site design that is aesthetically pleasing and functionally robust.

It depends on your market

This is obvious, and renders this entire discussion almost senseless. Ultimately, the use of text or images will depend on who your readership is. For advertising purposes they say that text works better for business, science, politics, and finances while images work better for gaming, sports, entertainment, and fashion.

The text blog versus image blog debate often seems strange because it’s so obvious that both sides function better when operating harmoniously with the other. While you may be able to say that text is better for SEO and images are better for entertainment, ultimately they are part and parcel of a well-balanced, user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing blog.

It is encouraging when you are aware that somebody is out there to appreciate your work, although not everybody would like to comment as well as has something to express.

There are lots of commenting system and plugins to encourage your readers but i will mention only 4 ways that can help.

1. Disqus Comment System

DISQUS is a comments platform, that we are using and it can help you build an active community out of your website’s audience. I like the usability and clean look of Disqus. It is simple to install and is widely used. It also helps to build social relationships as you comment on other people’s blogs and websites.

2. Comment Luv

Although i use Diqus comment system but many bloggers are using Comment Luv too. Using this comment system you can reward your visitors by automatically putting a backlink to their last blog post at the end of their comment. It will encourage a community to comment and let them experience new posts too.

3. Thank Me Later

This plugin is good to thank your community, because it automatically send an e-mail to those who leave a comment at your blog. It’ll prompt those to further build relationships with your website.

4. TwitterLink Plugin

This is quite rare but excellent method to encourage leaving comments. The reader just has to leave the comment with twitter user name and a url to the twitter account will be displayed in the comment.

The Design Blog : Extending Your Design Portfolio is a post from PelFusion

Over the last few years the design community has been virtually transformed by the growing blogosphere. Many in the field took to this expansive new medium as a way to connect with colleagues, potential clients, and other online audiences as well. However, one way that the design blog can be viewed that many designers overlook, causes a lot of potential to be missed, and that is to view their blog as a virtual extension of their online portfolios. Taking this stance will tend to increase the amount of effort and thought that we put into our sites.

Recently, over at Arbenting this point was really driven home, when two separate posts, a freebie that we had given away on our blog and a guest post that we had done on another blog, both yielded job opportunities from clients who had not visited our portfolios. So it is not like this principle is without its merit. The reason that this can be important to design bloggers, is because we tend to put a lot of work into our portfolios, ensuring that only quality goes into it. However, when it comes to our blog, quantity tends to trump quality at times. This is among the considerations that need to be made if you seek to maximize your blog’s potential and use it in this way.

Below is a look at a few of the ways that we can fine tune our blog and get it working with us in this new direction that we are steering it. This is not to say that you have to engage in all of the blogging activities listed below in order to increase your chances of reaching potential clients through your posts, but the more of them that you undertake the better your reach will be.

Design Freebies

One thing that you hear a lot when bloggers are dispensing advice on gaining traffic, is that giving something away on your site tends to draw people in. This falls in line with our discussion today, because on a design site, if you are going to give something away in order to attract readers, then try to make it something you have designed. A freebie of some kind. Now there are those in the community who feel like giving away design freebies is not necessarily a great thing for the field, but I disagree. Especially in this case.

Speaking of freebies, this was a wallpaper we gave away on the site that prompted a band to hire us to put together a new design for their cd cover.

Because when we design some sort of freebie to give away, we are not only drawing in readers, but we are also showcasing some of our design skills and know how by crafting usable and appealing design resources. There are many who forget that you can use these freebies as mini marketing posts for your site and your talents within the field. You never know who may be browsing your site or your freebies, and these types of posts on your blog can be attractive ways to highlight the designers behind the scenes, so to speak. So that is one way to potentially reach new clients through blogging.

Guest Blog for Other Design Sites

Another way to use your blogging skills to reach out to potential clients, is to effectively extend your reach beyond your own blog and do guest posts for other design related blogs as well. Given that increased visibility throughout the blogosphere is somewhat key to rising above the masses and being noticed by some of the more casual audience, finding other sites in your arena that you can do guest posts for can help grant you that more visible edge you need. Lets face it, the blogosphere is somewhat crowded these days, so anything we can do to help us stand out is useful.

The better you blog, the more opportunities you have to guest blog on sites with a much wider audience reach than your own, and this will really help with the visibility factor when it comes to getting out there. So work on your ability to really dissect a topic and present it in a helpful, easy to digest way so that you can be marketable among the blogosphere. There are a number of posts and sites that are dedicated to helping you improve your blogging skills, and honing your voice for an online audience that you might want to check out if you feel you might be somewhat lacking in this arena. So even if you are not quite there yet, that doesn’t mean you should give up. It takes time to get the formula where you want it.

So especially in the beginning of your time in the blogosphere, you want to accept whatever opportunities you have at your disposal in order to flex your voice and get it out there. Getting others to blog on your site is another boon in this effort, as you can often work out a trade of posts with some of your colleagues who are looking to get their voice out there as well.

Design Filled Posts

Another way to possibly reach out to new clients through your design blog, is to actually fill your posts with designs over just plain complementary images. This is not always the easiest to do given your posts specific topic may not lend to this method as naturally as you would like. But whenever it is possible, find ways to include some eye catching design work into the post to highlight a particular point in the discussion. This will more than likely be received well by your random readers as well as any potential clients browsing through the posts.

After initially consulting with the band, this was the concept they chose to jump off from, combining it with more of the color and style of the wallpaper that drew them in.

Interestingly enough, it is not always necessary for the designs that you are including in the post to actually be your own work to attract new clients your way. It just so happens that you can also be showcasing the work of other designers, and as long as you are able to effectively critique the work or provide a rundown which demonstrates a level of understanding of the field and processes then you might find businesses contacting you based on this display of design expertise. You might also find that you are being contacted because they think the designs showcased are your work. In these cases it is best to be honest and direct the client towards the owner of the piece, but this still provides you a chance to get your foot in the door.

Especially since the potential client will be directing you towards a design that tends to be along the lines of what they are looking for. When you contact them back to direct them onward (since we tend to link the images to their point of origin this is an easy forward) you can include some samples of your own work that might also fall into that same category to show them what you are capable of.

Quality Always Wins

As mentioned up front, when you are trying to use your blogging efforts to extend your portfolio, you want to apply some of those same rules to your blog that you would to the works you would include in your portfolio. The first and foremost being that you always want to opt for quality over quantity with regards to your blog posts. You do not want to be posting just to have some sort of fresh content on your blog. Content for the sake of content does not tend to follow on this quality rule and so when you are blogging to essentially expand your portfolio, you want to really tighten the content reins.

For this approach to work, when potential clients casually make their way to your blog, they need to connect with gold. You do not want them to have to sift through the filler content to find the posts that might lead them to hiring you for their next design project. Same goes for the content that you are putting out through the design community blogosphere as well. Those guest posts should be viewed as an extension of your own blog, and the same care and effort you put into your own posts should go into every post you put out. Again, for this approach to work right, quality always wins.

That’s a Wrap

That is all from this end for now, but that does not mean that the discussion is over. The comment section is now yours to follow up as you see fit. Add to the topics already introduced, or highlight some of your own approaches for successfully pulling off this extension below. Hopefully the post has left you with some things to think about.

WordPress vs Tumblr – Choosing the Right Blogging Platform for Your Clients is a post from PelFusion

In the world of web design, blogging has become a staple for most businesses looking to carve out a place of their own from which they can reach their intended audience to grow and stabilize their business. Many of them turn to us, the designers and coders, to determine what the best course of action is is for their businesses needs. For the most part, it seems a large part of the community tends to steer them towards WordPress. But is that always the way to go?

The Basic Rundown

There is no doubt that WordPress is a powerful content management system that can handle virtually anything we throw at it. But often times, it is this same quality that causes WordPress to not necessarily be the right option for all occasions. It can handle so much because it is an extremely complex and in-depth system, perhaps more than the client needs or can manage. This is where Tumblr can be a effective solution to this problem.

Tumblr offers a completely different approach to the tackling the blogosphere and using its reach to connect the client’s business with an audience. A much simpler solution on multiple fronts for all the parties involved. Naturally, Tumblr is not as comprehensive as WordPress, lacking its depth and more, but admittedly there are times when the client does not need all of that extra oomph. Most of the time we go with what we know and what is popular, so we give them the fully loaded SUV, when all they really need is a basic package subcompact car.

The Weigh-in

WordPress is standing at an impressive seven years and counting. Even more impressive is its reach with over 25 million users, which may just give it the edge in this contest. It certainly boasts a large community surrounding it, though there is not an inherent connection that brings them all together. We will get to functionality later, but we know that WordPress carries a lot of weight behind it in no matter the task. Now that is a lot to take on.

Tumblr comes in at a scrappy count of about three years and nine months. Now the commanding reach of its opponent does somewhat dwarf that of Tumblr who has just under 10 million users. Just like WP, Tumblr does have a large community just not as large as its opponent, however there is more of a tie that connects all of them with ease. Once again functionality, will be covered later, but this is another area that at first glance, Tumblr comes up short again. But never count out an underdog.

The Match

After the weigh in, WordPress supporters have to be feeling pretty good about this competition, as it clearly has the advantage. When it comes to blogging, WordPress seems to have the superior stats going in to the actual match. Making this feel like a mismatched bout between a heavyweight and a welterweight. But do not count Tumblr out so fast. Because the web is a dynamic and wonderful place with niches that are crying to be filled and sometimes the best solution is the one that fits the best. It is not always about bells and whistles.

WordPress

In the blue corner we have that powerhouse platform that is generally favored to come out ahead in most match-ups that it is entered into, and with good reason. It is a resourceful and flexible fighter with an accessible license. So lets take a look at the full rundown.

WordPress is a completely open source CMS which has opened it up to being improved upon by any and everyone who is willing to take the time to work on it. This also opens the door for the community to develop and design for this versatile platform. A market has sprung up around this area of WordPress, that thousands have responded to developing plugins and designing themes. This allows WP to easily handle a seemingly endless number of your client’s needs. It is not just about the blogging with WordPress, even though that is usually what it is thought of as.

WordPress is also fully customizable, so again, the possibilities it offers your clients continues to fulfill their desires. No matter what your client’s business provides, WordPress not only gives them the ability to present it in creative and stylish ways, but it allows them to be able to update their site and information with relative ease. There is a bit of a learning angle, much more than a curve, but it can be managed. The community has also seen to covering this angle with plenty of helpful tutorials and forums for handling any issues that users have getting started with this powerful tool.

The learning angle is somewhat accentuated by the vast and complex backend, though it does have a very user friendly interface with a fairly clear navigation system to ease new users into it. Now the relative ease of updating gets upgraded as the users knowledge base widens so that is not an issue for long. As for the coding it takes to pull together, WP starts to slip a little in favor here by comparison. Though it is open, it is in-depth and takes some time and expertise to make it fit for your different clients.

Though there is a community aspect to WordPress, it does not often extend to connecting the audiences with the various sites using this platform to build on. Once your client launches and begins using the site it is up to them to find ways to find and draw in their audience. If they are not necessarily adept at reaching out through the cyber channels and social media networks then they are going to have a difficult road ahead of them to get established with the online community they are trying to access.

All in all, there is a reason that WordPress has grown into one of the most popular content management systems around the interwebs, but we do have to consider its downsides when assessing our client’s abilities and needs. WP may not always be the balanced approach they need, instead it could be seen as a Swiss army knife solution. Virtual overkill.

Tumblr

In the slightly different shade of blue corner is that feisty underdog with what some would call a rabid following that is gaining in popularity near daily, Tumblr. This platform finds itself less flexible than its opponent, but since we are talking about tackling blogging, Tumblr cannot be counted out. It is specifically tailored for this arena and it fits in nicely. Here’s the rundown.

Tumblr is not open source, so it is not as accessible to the community to be expanded, but given its simple nature, said expansion could potentially compromise that simplicity, so it does not lose many points for this less than accessible license. Though there is a market that the community is responding to, it does not have the numbers that WP does or the capabilities granted by the open development aspect. Which also means that Tumblr does not have the plugin library available to enhance and tweak it to your client’s specific blogging needs like WP does.

So it may not have the all the bells and whistles of its opponent, but it does have them. And it can be an awesome niche filler in the blogosphere with its ease of uploading and sharing information, images, audio and video and more. Speaking of its community, the audience that your client is looking to connect with is waiting right at the click of a trackable tag for any and all of their content so long as they include the keywords when posting. So the user does not have to have a lot of know how when it comes to navigating the social media circuits that would otherwise be required to reach their audience. This can lead to a much more expedited establishment of their business online.

Speaking of the client’s know how, the learning curve with Tumblr is a lot easier to conquer for the less than savvy user than WP. The simple interface is preferred for some on both ends of the spectrum. Clients have less to confuse them, and the designers or developers have less to explain to them. Speaking of the learning curve, designing and coding for Tumblr sites is a complete breeze in comparison. With simple calls and bare basic variables used in the HTML, Tumblr takes this round. Though there is a lack of customization when compared to WP. Not much beyond the plugins, but it is there.

One area that acts as a sort of double edged sword for Tumblr in this contest is the hosting aspect. Normally a somewhat costly concern that your client is responsible for once you have handed the project over to them, is completely handled here. Tumblr hosts everything on the blog, but this is not without its downsides. And its downtimes, which is the first main drawback to this approach. Not to mention that there are somewhat strict daily upload limits imposed on user that would not be there if they could host the site elsewhere. So that is not always a practical solution for everyone.

All in all, Tumblr can allow your clients to explore various aspects of blogging, and can allow them experiment with approaches for their content that maximize all that this platform has to offer with little instruction, but it does have its limitations. It cannot meet all of the needs certain clients may demand of their site, but that does not mean it does not have its strengths.

The Verdict

Both platforms have their pros and their cons, which make them uniquely suited for different clients and their requirements. In this contest it becomes less a matter of which is the better system, as much as it is all about which is the better fit for the project at hand with all things considered. Have you worked with both platforms as either a designer or developer, and if you have, which do you prefer? Have you ever steered a client towards one of these two blogging platforms, only to recognize now they could have been better off having gone with the other?

Blueprint For A Successful Design Blog is a post from PelFusion

The blogosphere is growing by leaps and bounds, and as the design field also expands many designers are looking to take their business and brand to a blog. The landscape is crowded with so many longing to get their brand established and garner the full advantages that this online presence can offer. However, the blueprint that some are following is not always one that will lead them where they are wanting to end up.

Success is naturally something that we all strive for with our projects, there are not too many who set out to have their endeavors fail. When we take on any charge we tend to outline our expectations and our benchmarks for success, because success can be a completely subjective term. When it comes to the design blog, again, there are various relative successes that are satisfied with the place and audience that their blog has found.

However, there are two broad and basic definitions that are usually accepted en mass by the blogging community when it comes to a site, for whether or not it is a success. And though not all bloggers judge their site by these same standards, these two prevailing ideas are the ones that most people base judge their sites by. They either measure their success based on generated financial gains or by a noticeable community impact. Whichever approach you choose you will need to use the blueprint that matches up with your mission.

Building Your Blueprint

There is not a lot of difference in the way you approach your blog when choosing either of these directions, but the differences are there. And you need to have an accurate and full understanding of your blueprint before you get started in order to save yourself the time and headache that usually comes with struggling to find your direction after the fact. Below are some areas to focus on when putting your design blog blueprint together.

Decide Your Direction

First things first, you have to know which direction you plan to go with your blog before you dive headfirst into the water. Otherwise you will spend most of your time treading water without actually making any forward progress. It will lead to a stagnating start that you may or may not be able to recover from. Just as we would expect our clients to know where they are heading so we know what to communicate, the same applies to design blogging. We have to know where we want to go, so we know what to we need to say.

Set Your Benchmarks

As your blueprint begins to come together, and starts taking shape, you will want to be sure and give yourself some reasonable benchmarks for your blog’s development and growth. Otherwise it can be easy to become discouraged if your site is not growing at an elevated rate of expectation spurred on by outside stresses and pressures. Pace yourself modestly, if you find overnight success then that is fantastic. But if you expect it, and then it does not show up on your doorstep it might leave you questioning your decision to begin blogging.

Find the Right Design

It was discussed recently in a post on Vandelay Design about the impact your blog’s design can have on your traffic, which means the design has more impact than just for establishing your brand. It may in fact be driving people away from your site, either through navigation frustration or other bad design choices. So make sure that your blueprint focuses on the design that you decide represents your site, and choose it well. Also, be able to let your site design adapt and develop just as you do in your skills, and never be too rigid, clinging to elements of the design that simply work against you.

Examples of Design Done Right

Here are just a few of the folks who have taken the time and effort to get their design right. Be it through unique styling, working the whitespace, bold typography, layered navigation, and so on.

Janko at Warp Speed

Abduzeedo

My Ink Blog

Tripping Words

Connect with the Community

One must have element for your design blog blueprint is connectivity with the online design community. This is key in helping to make the most of any new design blog venture, as the community is an irreplaceable resource that can not only provide you with invaluable tools for growth, but they can also provide you with an outlet for stress relief. As you find out from these connections that you are not alone in your journey, and the barriers and roadblocks that bar your progress are pestering others as well.

Ways to reach out and get involved!

DCTH – or Design Community Twitter Hours.

Create a Fan page on Facebook

Connect with Your Readers

Speaking of must have connectivity, especially if you are pursuing the impact measure of success for your blog, one blueprint basic that almost goes without saying is the connection you make with your readers. Engaging your audience is a standard rule for almost any artistic medium and the art of blogging is certainly no different. The benefits of this are to numerous to consider singularly, but no matter which means of success you hope to achieve, this connection cannot be undervalued.

Resources for Your Readers

Disqus Comment System

How To Style Author Comments Differently

Comment Luv Plugin

Track Your Stats

One blueprint addition that some might consider to be more of a minor element, but one that should still be in your thought process nonetheless, is your blog traffic statistics. This will help you not only deliver the content that your readers and passers-by are searching for, but it will help you find the content that lands and the content that tends to fall flat. This way you are not wasting your efforts producing content that does not add to your blog, but instead takes away from it.

Stat Tools

Mint Website Stat Tracking

Google Analytics

W3 Counter WordPress Blog Stats Plugin

Wassup WordPress Plugin

Commit to Your Content

For a blog engaging and communicating is what it is all about, and the number one engager and communicator for your blog is the content generated for it. You hear it all over the web, content is king, and once you have established which direction you plan on steering your site, the content is what will take you there. So make a commitment to your content, and put the effort and time into it that both it and your readers deserve and it will pay off.

Live Beyond Your Blog

It is extremely easy, especially in the beginning, to get so wrapped up in this new venture that you allow it to basically take over your life and you live within the pages and posts of your blog. No one should lose themselves in their site to the point that they are ignoring the larger community, and only focusing on the one that surrounds their site. Network, guest post, in short, remember that a blogger is a social being that requires communal interaction to thrive. So step outside of your site to comment and share beyond your blog, it will benefit you and your site.

Don’t Be an Anonymous Blogger

This next point goes a bit hand in hand with one or two other blueprint elements but that crossover is expected when laying a solid foundation to build on. Don’t be an anonymous blogger. Yes, there is something to be said for that surrounding air of mystery, but that air tends to be to constrictive for the blogosphere. Readers want to be able to connect with the blogger, and know a bit about the person they are going on this journey with. This will help to establish trust in your blog and it will bring readers back.

The Marketing Mark

The final blueprint element that I am going to discuss for the post is one that poses a challenge to many of those in the blogosphere, and that is the making your mark through a solid marketing effort. Especially in the beginning, when you may not have enough capital to financially market your blogging venture, it is vital that you be able to effectively market the site and yourself on your own. Whichever approach you take to marketing the blog, make sure that you allow enough time and focus to keep it up and not let it fall behind. You want to keep your visibility high.

Further Resources
