Logo is the foremost important item of any company’s profile. It mainly comprises of three most important elements:

1. The icon or a symbol
2. The font (Typogrophy)
3. The color palette

In order to discuss these elements, it’s important to first know why these elements are essential parts of logo designing. Just as a song is composed of several notes and is harmonized to become one great composition, similarly a logo is a harmony, a balance and comprises of all the design principles discussed earlier.

The Icon

The icon of a logo is a symbol, a simple and direct or indirect messenger of the company. Symbolism has been used as part of designing even in ancient times. As you study the history, you would come to know that the first medium of communication was through symbolism. Symbolism can be direct or indirect. To know this much elaborately you must know what SEMIOTICS is. Semiotics is language of signs, some signs give you a visible meaning but there are signs which have hiddden meanings. These hidden meanings are referred as ARCHETYPES. The archetype is a tendency to form such representations of a motif – representations that can vary a great deal in detail without losing their basic pattern.  This representation may convey several meanings to a viewer who have different perceptions.

This symbol misght just be some curved lines of different sizes for many, but actually has an archetypal background also, like the curves may represent speed, power, energy or rapid movement. Whenever you are using any icon or symbol, you must also keep inmind it’s archetypal quality.

Similarly rapid movement, fun, frolic and intensity can be percieved in this symbol.

Same is the case with STEROTYPES. Stereotypes are generalizations, or assumptions, that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an image (often wrong) about what people in that group are like, which means whatever images or icons you are using you must represent your actual thought or concept in the most  true manner. The icons used are mostly very simple because of the fact that logos are usually for printing purposes. A logo must have a quality of great expansion and great contraction without losing it’s quality. A logo which has to come on your business card can also be used for other purposes like embossing, carving or sand blasting. This is why use of gradients, shadows, highlights are never reccomended. They should therefore be vector based and simple.

The Font

The second part of logo is the font. The fonts play a very important role in determining the character of your design. Funky, stylish typography is used for fashion icons or any other brand depending on it’s profile. Straight dynamic fonts are powerful, energetic, thus conveying a deep message. Curvy fonts convey feminism and can convey graceful meanings. Just by selecting the fonts from your available list might not be a right choice. The true essence of typography must be understood since fonts have different personalities. There are businesslike fonts, fonts that look educational, fonts that are funny, and others that are clean and modern. Your font also has the added job of being legible, both at large sizes and when your logo is very small. You don’t want viewers to struggle to make sense of your business name, so use a highly legible font that makes your name readable at a glance.

The Color Palette

The third part is the color palette. Colors have different emotional effects and psychological meanings, some meanings understood by everyone and some hidden meanings. Before deciding the color palette of your logo you must know what printing process your logo will go through. What is the client’s budjet, is he affording the four color logo or does he want it to be 2 or 3 color. Are you using any special color like golden or silver which is definitely not just because you want your logo to stand out, but there must be special need of it. Some colors have universal meanings e.g. Red is hot, bold, energetic and maybe dangerous. What is the wavelength of a color? This must be kept in mind. Yellow is warm and to some people a color of hatred. Blue is royal, it’s vast just like sky and so on. Our minds are programmed to respond to color. The subliminal messages we get from color shape our thoughts. As humans our very survival is hung on the identification of color. We stop our cars for red lights and go on green, we look at the color of certain plants and animals to determine whether or not they are safe for us to eat or touch, the bottom line is that color is a very important part of our daily lives. It’s important for us as designers to use color appropriately and understand the meaning behind the colors we choose.

Red as said depicts energy, power and strength is the core element of the above logo.

Similarly blue, the color of vastness, sky definitely is inculcated in the logo of NASA, vey well depicting it’s essence.

Colors that stand out do not necessarily have to beautify your logos. But yes they make them bold, which actually depends on the company’s profile.  

Determination of icon, font and color must be coherent with the brand’s identity.

Brand Identity

Different brands have different characteristics and one part of it becomes their identity. In other words this is what we call as “Brand Persona”. Persona literally meaning mask very well signifies what we are talking here. Every brand has a special persona which is signified in the logo and later in other advertising. E.g. Coke has a brand persona of “WE”. On the other hand Pepsi has the brand persona of “I”. To further elaborate it let’s discuss with the mentioned examples.

In all the advertising campaigns of Coca Cola there is always a group of people enjoying Coke. The drink becomes a part of celebrations and mingles with everyone. On the other hand Pepsi always becomes a star. One person or a few having some trouble and Pepsi saves them or cheers them up or lifts up their moods, thus becoming “I” the great. These very simple examples portray how brand identity is inculcated in the designs esp the logo. As we say archetypal message in Pepsi is the white part differentiating from the other two red and blue keeping the identity of “I”. Coca cola is curvy, it’s cheerful celebration and is hyphenated joing the two sides…the bond between the two making “WE”.  It has waves, the movement and intersection very well defines its identity.

Difference between Logo, Insignia and a Monogram

A logo as already discussed is a very simple identity of a brand. Insignia on the other hand is much detailed, with lots and lots of smaller elements and details just like we see few government and semi government logos. These have a quality of retaining a specific size.

A monogram is with less details, e.g. logos of institutions.

Logo is specific of its simplicity and minor details…the simples the better.

Whatever icon you take, the font you use, the colors, identity, but you want to make sure that the logo you decide on will work well. Many business owners make the mistake of basing their logo choices on their personal preferences. But your ‘likes’ should have very little to do with your logo design. It should be conceptual, lucrative and  most importantly should display the brand’s characteristics.

This is an easy mistake to make for those outside the industry, after all, unless you have studied or worked in the branding arena then this underestimation of what all is involved is easy to fall subject to. When really the process has so much more depth that most do not even consider, and to learn to make the distinction is really quite simple. Though the undertaking it clarifies is anything but.

The Nutshell

As I said, this concept can be fairly simple to get a handle on, all we need to do is to come at it from a slightly different perspective. In fact, you needn’t even understand the complex nature of the design fields and the specifics that relate, you need only to understand people. Imagine if you will that the company being represented was a person. In this context, the logo would be like the face of the company, whereas the brand would be not just their overall appearance, but also their personality.

Now if the logo is the face, then the brand would be the laughter, the aura, and just the overall way that the person carries and presents themselves.

So in a nutshell, that is the major distinction between a logo and a brand. While a brand incorporates the logo, and the logo reflects elements of the brand, the two are not interchangeable in language or in practice. The relationship between these two can also be looked on as somewhat unbalanced, for in order to create a brand you have to have a logo in the mix. However, in contrast, you can have a logo for your company without having taken the time and effort to develop a full fledged brand. So that is the basic look as we scratch the surface, but let us press on.

Delving Deeper

Now that we have a handle on the essence of what separates these two arenas of design, let us dive a little bit deeper into brand design. Through this further examination of the scope of the approach necessary to tackle this client request fully we hope to clear up this common misunderstanding even more. So below are a few important points that we should always keep in mind, that mark some major differences between a logo and a brand.

Counting on Consistency

The first thing that we are going to discuss about branding is the element that truly establishes and helps connect all of the dots necessary to bring a brand together, and that is consistency. This is a key to branding. Throughout the lifetime of a company, logos change, and this does grab our attention but it is somewhat expected. In contrast however, brands rely on consistency throughout the span of the company to solidify and built trust within it. And that trust, is one of the main draws to establishing a brand presence for your company within your market.

For consistent brand growth, you need a steady and consistent reach, like roots extending through all of the mediums available to your company.

Now let us look a little harder at the consistency demanded by branding, because design-wise there are some necessary concessions that have to be made, and understood to successfully pull this off. Generally speaking, branding design extends through the various methods of visual presentations, tying them all together through a consistent voice speaking to the various audiences. No matter the medium the company is being presented through, there is a consistent message, one that is immediately recognizable. By keeping consistent typefaces, color schemes, and overall design, the brand gets developed.

The Marketing Share

Now where branding design tends to take a far leap ahead in differentiating itself from logo design is in part, the marketing. For here the marketing approach is also part of the branding equation. With logo design, we tend to make light considerations with regards to the marketing, but generally only so far as to design a logo that can transferred to various marketing mediums successfully. With branding, you have to go much deeper and conceptualize an entire marketing approach to devise a way to help steer each interaction with the audience to help ensure that they are left with the proper takeaways.

The more that your brand sets your company apart, the more opportunity you have to establish yourself and capture more of your market.

With a brand, you have to differentiate this one company from all others sharing their market, and it takes much more than a logo to do this. For a brand is a much more emotional connection that accompanies the visuals than it is just a logo. Designing an approach like this requires a deep understanding of the various user interactions, so much more so than when designing a logo. Without this understanding the brand you are designing will not be as effective as it needs to capture a viable share of the market it is dropped into.

Overall, the difference between logo design and branding can essentially come down to the focus on the experience. While logo design is more about the aesthetics and visuals, branding places a higher focus on the individual interactions and experiences each user has with the company. This is why marketing figures so highly into the equation, because it is through the company’s marketing that they initially connect with and establish themselves with their audience. Laying the foundation necessary to build trust upon for your company.

1. Adobe

Adobe has been at the forefront of graphic and multimedia software creation for almost two decades. Since launching its flagship product Photoshop in 1989, Adobe has remained head and shoulders above its competition in brand recognition alone. The current logo is smart, simple and instantly recognizable.

The “A” in the current logo has been created from the whitespace between various red hued angular shapes. The original logo created by Marva Warnock, wife of one of the company’s founders, has evolved into the current logo, retaining the basic shape of the “A” from the original.

2. FedEx

FedEx Corporation or FDX Corporation as it was originally known has one of the best examples of negative space usage in logo design. The company renowned for its global logistics business uses a word mark as its logo rather than a separate symbol with text alongside. The ‘Fed’ is always purple and the ‘Ex’ is a different color for each of the company divisions, with grey used for the corporate version.

The “Ex” in the logo contains a hidden right-pointing arrow in the negative space between the “E” and the “X”. This describes the nature of the business – global transport or movement of freight.

3. NBC

The original NBC peacock with 11 feathers, created by John J. Graham, first appeared in 1956. The logo was created to represent the richness and increase in color programming on the network.

The logo in its present form (above) has been in use since 1986, when it was launched during NBC’s 60th anniversary celebration. Incorporating the six primary and secondary colors, this peacock, redesigned by Chermayeff & Geismar, remains one of the world’s most recognized logos.

The peacock’s head was flipped to the right to suggest it was looking forward, not back. The eleven feathers from its previous incarnation was shortened to six to reflect NBC’s six major divisions at that time – News, Sports, Entertainment, Stations, Network and Productions.

4. F1

Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1, is the highest class of auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA – the governing body for many motor racing events).

The logo created in the early 2000s is a great example of the use of negative space in design in an effort to associate it with the activity of the organization. The logo uses the initial “F” and some graphics representing speed to form the numeral 1 in the negative space between them. Similar to the Adobe logo in simplicity and color palette, this logo too is easily recognizable.

5. WWF

The WWF or the World Wildlife Fund uses black and white, positive and negative spaces in its logo to represent the mascot of the organization – a Giant Panda. This classic logo was designed by its founder chairman, the naturalist and painter Sir Peter Scott, in 1961 and has undergone only minor transformations until its present incarnation (above).

6. Toblerone

We’ve all enjoyed the wonderful and uniquely shaped Swiss chocolates from Toblerone – originally created by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann in Bern, Switzerland in 1908. But it’s not only their chocolates which are distinctive. The logo is quite brilliant too.

The logo is said to be in the shape of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. But what is unique is the use of the whitespace in the logo to create a bear silhouette, the bear being the local mascot of Bern.

7. USA Network

This logo for the USA Network, though simple, is very effective. The use of the negative space between the “U” and the “A” to create an “S” is smart and it gives the logo a unique look.

8. Kölner Zoo

The Kölner Zoo in Cologne is famous for its Elephant Park, which is why the main silhouette is that of an elephant. The whitespace for the elephants head, eye and legs has been used very effectively depicting a star for the eye, a giraffe between the head, trunk and fore legs, a rhinoceros between the fore and hind legs and the Cologne Cathedral’s twin spires in the negative space between the hind legs and tail.

9. Guild of Food Writers

This logo for the Guild of Food Writers, a UK based organization, is wonderful in its simplicity. It describes the business of the organization perfectly. The logo depicts the nib of a fountain pen with a spoon in the negative space near the tip.

10. MyFonts

At first glance the logo for the website “MyFonts” may look like a simple cursive typeface with no immediate negative space manipulation. However, on closer inspection, we see that the whitespace along with the text of the word “My” has been cleverly disguised to resemble a raised hand to indicate the personalization of the fonts.
