While designing a web site you should take care of site optimization too, which can be done in various ways and the most important out of them is image optimization which decreases the loading time and web pages load faster. Image optimization and page loading time are very important in SEO. Image optimization will also save bandwidth and disk space on your server.

Lots of tools are available on net which can help to optimize and reduce the image size. Those tools could be web based or desktop applications.

So, here are 17 excellent image optimization tools for you to choose among for optimizing images.

1. Smush.it

Smush.it uses optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files. It is a “lossless” tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality.

2. Web Resizer

Webresizer is a free service provided by SiteSpace. Originally written as a free tool for clients to use when updating websites.

3. Online Image Optimizer- GIF, JPG, and PNG

Image Optimizer lets you easily optimize your gifs, animated gifs, jpgs, and pngs, so they load as fast as possible on your site. Furthermore, you can easily convert from one image type to another.

4. GIF Bot

GIFBot is a free graphics optimization tool.

5. RIOT

RIOT can be used to save and optimize JPEG, GIF and PNG with a simple, clean user interface.

6. PNGOUT

PNGOUT is a tool which can optimize PNG files created by other programs. It can be run from the Windows Run dialog box or at the command prompt.

15. SiteReportCard Image Optimization Tool

The SiteReportCard Image Optimization tool is a free utility that compresses your GIF, JPEG, and PNG images.

16. JPG & PNG Stripper

A tool for stripping/cleaning/removing uncessary metadata (junk) from JPG/JPEG/JFIF & PNG files.

17. TweakPNG

TweakPNG is a low-level utility for examining and modifying PNG image files.

My vote is for Smush.it. You can have it optimize all of the images on a project, and then download them in a zip file which maintains directories. As if this wasn’t simple enough if you use the YSlow extension of Firefox you can do all of this from within Firefox without having to type anything in. Such a time saver. I normally see about a 20% reduction of site size after using this tool on client sites.
